I have driven several different Porsches, so I will throw my 2 cents into the ring.

"earlier" 911: I drove my mechanic's 1982 911SC (I know, it's not an early car, but it felt a lot different than a 993). This car was a blast to drive: torquey, nimble, and just plain fun. Around turns it can get a little worrisome, for the handling is a little twichy at speed.

"later" 911: I had the absolute pleasure to drive a 1995 993 Cab... man, what a hoot! It is undoubtedly the fastest car I have ever driven, and the handling felt on-par with the 944-series cars I have driven... although it does feel a little on the heavy side after driving a SC and a 944.

928: The first Porsche I ever drove was a 1980 grey-market 928S. I remember it being very fast in the straight line, and it handled well, but felt hefty through the turns. What I have always understood is that if you want a fast luxury car with the capabilities of a Porsche, get a 928.

944: My car is a 1983 944. Not as fast as the other Porsches listed, I feel confident it would hand any of the others (except maybe the 993) their walking papers on a track. The handling is simply amazing... turn-in is sharp, steering feel is precise, body roll is minimal (the 928 had the most body roll by far). What the 944 lacks in low-end grunt (the car doesn't begin to REALLY pull until 3000rpm in 3rd gear), it more than makes up for in driveability. I have also driven a 1986 944 and a 1987 924S; the later 944 felt slightly less nimble due to the weight that the car put on over the years, and the 924S felt almost identical to my car, possibly even better-handling (it's close anyway).
