so, i replaced the donut gasket again on the subie. at first the leak was worse. then i drove it around and it seems to have sealed up. i'll have to keep an eye on it.

when i pried the old gasket off, it took some material from the original gasket with it. i cleaned it up really good and then used some scotch brite to get it even cleaner. thus, you guys were right: some of the old material was still stuck on there and preventing a good seal. thanks!
