I went thru that with my alternator on the El Camino. AutoZone kept giving me a different POS that either had a bad bearing or would not charge properly. I finally bought a rebuilt unit from a local rebuild shop that is a one wire alternator. I went to Auotzone and got another free replacement and put it on the shelf as a backup. The one wire unit died a week later. I put the AutoZone one on and it was perfect. Instant 13.4 volts and quiet. The rebuild guy fixed his unit for free. He said it was a defective stator and it was very unusual that it failed. Now I have a spare alternator on the shelf. I can swap the alternator in 15 or 20 minutes.
