I also have a factory hard top and the latches are indeed completely different than the folding top latches; even using different holes in the windshield frame. I guess either method would work on a new design top, but both should be investigated to estimate the cost of duplicating. Both have somewhat complex latching mechanisms that won't be easy to dupe.
