Back in May of 1999 Oklahoma CIty had a F-5 tornado. It was the highest wind speed ever recorded on earth 302 MPH or 486 KPH! It literally scoured the ground and pulled up grass roots and all. It was bad, very bad.
Only 48 people were killed. Several of them because they were misinformed and thought a highway overpass was a good place to shelter from a tornado. We had several HOURS of warning. We watched it live on TV and knew block by block where it was.
In fact we had a days of warning that a bad storm was brewing and to be vigilant about the weather that day. The local media did a great job of warning everyone.
The national media made it sound like the the entire city was destroyed. We never even lost power in our part of the city.
