Bear fat was
the go-to patch lube for the old Rocky Mountain trappers in their day (1800 ~ 1840's), vash. It took on legendary status as such. Sperm whale oil was acknowledged as a better patch lube but, by then, they were getting harder and harder to find in the Rockies.
