I did smooth the edges slightly before I installed it, there's nothing sharp enough to get bloody given how tight the confines in the pocket are - I have to squirm my hand in slowly anyway. As for painting it black, I thought about that and decided to leave it as is for now. The bronze finish is much darker down in the pocket than it looks in the photo, the camera flash really lightens it. In person, it is not out of place at all in my brown door pocket.
