I can understand the company would prefer to get the ship to a port where repairs are possible asap. But if they were thinking about the pass. the quick dropoff would have shortened their ordeal by many days.

Because there is no way to fix the ship in a Mexican port. Logistics to bring the men and materials into Mexico to do the repairs and the time required would be astronomical.
News reports say the company has offered the passengers a full refund, a second cruise and $500 cash. Not to mention hotel and connecting flights when they reach port.
