Probably has something to do with land mass size.
The whole earth is pelted by space junk daily. Just look up at the sky at night and you will usually see one or two falling stars. Around Christmas, I counted 3 in the 15 minutes I was outside one evening. I would say it's just bad luck that Russia now has on record two relatively large strikes within 100 years.
