Any highly modified, high end sports car is not a great investment. Unless like John R said, it's got some notoriety, history, or whatever makes it worth more.
However if you want a great car with a big displacement 911 engine, and all the suspension, brakes, transmission, exhaust, (blah, blah, blah), it's going to cost you some serious money.
If you build a car from the ground up, with all of the goodies, you're getting well into Boxster/BoxsterS money. So you know what you are getting into well before you start writing checks. Also add the fact that a custom 914-6 costs more to build than a 911.
Where I'm going with this is, that there are a few guys out there with enough money and love of 914's that a few cars sell in the $30,000+ range. Shoot, doing a full restoration on a 2.0 is going to cost you $20,000.
The bottom line is when the the other guy, who's just as crazy; buys the car.
