This book by Bernard Moitessier "The Long Way" Is a fun story about his sail 1 and 2/3 times around the world solo, non stop on his boat Joshua (named in Honor of Slocum). It started as a race around the world in 1968 then turned into his quest for a worthwhile landfall after a long sail. Amazing descriptions of sailing in the roaring 40s and furious 50s in the southern ocean.

and Jack London's The Cruise of the Snark, he read Slocom's book and wanted to do something like that but with his wife and a friend. He had a boat built for it but chose some people that weren't very good at it, the boat barley got out of SanFran Bay, it did finally make it to Hawaii where it needed a lot of work to go forward.
