No, it's just an A/C part that was mentioned above and 78, 79 does not have it as part of their A/C system.
I'll try to help you out as much as possible with your project. Just take it slow and one step at a time. Dream of paint schemes, but don't waiste time painting right now. work on what all of us have suggested and get it running.
You will need to test both fuel pumps, the first one is underneath the fuel tank and can be accessed by removing the metal "bra" or "girdle" that holds the tank under the car. The second is in the rear passenger side wheel well.
Replace fuel lines.
now that you have the spider off. find vacuum diagram and replace all vacuum lines. It seems daunting, but buy bulk hose...8mm or 1/4 inch..i forget now...and replace one line at a time...don't pull em all off at once. It really doesn't take that long.
Make sure the 4" diameter gasket that connects the body of the spider to the intake manifold. Big source of vacuum leakage.
You will need to have the fuel distributor professionally rebuild, buy a reman one, or find an alluminium one off of an old v8 mercedez in the junk yard. (for some reason, they held up better than the cast iron Porsche"
The goal here is to eliminate problems and if you half ass these few things, you will be chasing ghosts.
The next thing is the WUR. I almost guarentee your's will need to be replaced. I'm a fairly good shade tree mechanic and I ruined mine trying to rebuild the internals working parts. I'm not saying you can't do it, I'm just saying to knock things off the list, you won't know if you did it right or not and the ghost will still be in the machine.
Lastly, hook up a fuel pressure guage to the system and read the pressures. You can find the range in the manuals. I think if i remember right "bar" should be about 1.5 at start and then rise to around 3.5 at temp. I'm sure I'm a little off, but you get the picture.
You willl spend most of your time learning fuel pressures. Fuel is the reason your car is not running...almost rock solid positive. clean the gunk and get the pressure system working...done. There is "system pressure" and "control pressure" They both need to be spot on.
Check timing. Good luck. I'll help if I can and even have new WUR for a standard...i can't remember if yours is standard or automatic. Yours was in about the same shape as mine when I started the project and I bet I spend roughly $700 dollars and four months of "i'll be in in a minute honey" work. I could have done it for less money if I had just stuck to the above steps and done it right the first time. I'll stop rambling.
