Lowering it will cause the front wheels to lean in significantly. I would think that lowering it a whole inch could very well cause those problems if it wasn't aligned. Even aligned the steering might be more jumpy if that makes any sense. Did you have a bump steer kit installed? It would help and you should do it before the alignment. Even the cheap ones help some.
