Sea Shepherd are not firing stun grenades. They are being used by the Japanese. You are correct, only an idiot would fire an incediniary device at a tanker.
Here is the extended video. Bob Barker is steaming parallel to the orange tanker, certainly to interfere with illegal hevy re-fueling. The Nisshin Maru clearly closes on the Bob Barker and makes deliberate contact.
