Stopper needs to be there it's a metal bracket on floorboard adjusted by loosening two bolts to give 25mm travel see tech article on adjusting clutch.

I'm thinking the new cable is too long or perhaps the clutch pedal travel is too long - allowing the o spring to be overextended. The small rubber stopper on the floorboard is missing.
