It is an old English term. Being older and being originally English when I was a young lad of about 10 yo sometimes I would receive mail addressed to my name followed by Esquire or Esq. for short. Esquire if you look at the word contains squire and in old English books they might refer to the Squire of the village. I have not googled it but now you have me thinking about it more.

Sign off recycled sixtie Esq.....sounds kind of stuffy. If folks are receiving mail like that in the US it means that the zombies have invaded already!
