During the 1980s as a result of the increased illegal traffic of narcotics and migrants in the Caribbean,. the Coast Guard established the Mobile Aerostat Program.

It has developed and supplied a variety of parachutes for a wide range of applications that include para-dropping of troops, weapons and combat vehicles; braking of fighter aircraft; and recovery of payloads of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles and the Indian Space Research Organisation's recoverable satellite.
