Too many parents think their kid should go to college, yet know not the reality of what it means. They (and the idiot guidance counselors at school) are so out of touch with the real world that they give false hope and poor guidance.

A student loan is the best investment in one's future....but if you invest poorly...like spending it on a degree that's not going to pan out...you are a fool.
I didn't read all the posts, but the ones that talk about well-roundedness is a bunch of crap. You don't go to college to get well-rounded in 4 years or with the few electives you are going to take. Life and the preparation for life does not start at college. If an adult (notice I did not say child) is not prepared prior to college...chances of success are less.
It is not the banks' nor the colleges' fault.....
