I have a sand filter. A couple times a year I shut down the pump (same time frame I clean out the pump basket) and set the filter head to backwash which when the pump is turned back on pushes the grunge back out of the sand and out the drain hose. Then in the fall when I drain the pool down I pump the water down to below the intake/return lines by backwashing it again.
The only drawback to using this type of cleaner is you have to fill the hose with water before it works. Spring of the year when the water is still cold it's a tad chilly on the hands. You shouldn't have that problem.
