i put up the first wireless in my neighborhood. Called it Homey. Now I have Homey AND HomeyG, for 2.4 and 5 GHz. There are also a bunch of other networks up now. I also don't run any security on my wireless lan.
At one point I had some wireless routers with amped up radios that I could get on my network from over 1/4 mile away. It was weird. In one direction I could get a half mile away with a strong signal, but couldn't cross my back fence line. The back fence line has both above and below ground utilities. I can step back and forth across my fence and only see the networks on that side of the fence. Had several wireless professionals try but none could get a signal across the fence. It was a shame too. Two executives from the company I work for live in the gated community behind my house. One just across the fence, and the other across the street from them. If I could have gotten my wireless to them the company would have paid for my business cable internet access.
When I had the hot rod routers I offered my neighbors on either side internet access, but they both put up their own. The were freeloading until I offered. Now I have one neighbor with a Galaxy phone that pops up on my network. My guess is they don't know they are on my network.
