Well, I think you'll find East TN to be pretty friendly. If you get way off the beaten path there is a bit of "he's not from around here" vibe, but mostly everyone is really friendly. One of the guys I work with is from Ireland and he recently bought a house in a little area called Greenback and he was amazed at how everyone basically accepted him as a "local".

3+ acres of land where we can have our horse. House itself doesn't need to be very big (around 1000sqft). Out buildings are nice but not required. I am up to the Maryville, Townsend area also. My SIL recommended that area also.

The beauty of the Maryville/Townsend area is that you feel like you're out in the middle of nowhere, but you're actually close to civilization with all of the conveniences that brings with it.
