The oil gets hot, but not hot enough to melt rubber. And certainly not hot enough to set it on fire. If you are really concerned, buy a silicone baking sheet. Silpat or some such. Cut it up as needed. Silicone stands up to 450 degrees F with no problems. If your oil is running at 450, you have some much bigger problems than the silicone mat.
