One big difference....great weather vs well, the opposite.
North Carolina is the prettiest state in the union. Amazing mountain roads dotted with small towns on the west end of the state, and the Atlantic Ocean lapping it's waves on the Outer Banks. Wife and I hope to retire there one day. NC or MD...really? That choice is a no-brainer for me.
