Hey Chris,
I made the move in 1996; grew up in Claremont, went to school in Irvine and then UCSD. Denver's pretty perfect but I do miss Del Mar and Encinitas where I was living just before coming here, at times.
I did the master planned thing here for about ten years. The biggest master planned area is Highlands Ranch/Lone tree and I lived in both. You couldn't drag me back there. Everything in the 'burbs is beige, the people all look the same; picture Newport Coast on a budget and you'll get the idea. It's very much like South OC where you are now, though. It's less than 20 miles south of Downtown Denver.
The real charm of Denver for me are the older, close in neighborhoods like Bonnie Brae, Washington Park, Hilltop, and Cherry Creek. These areas are between fifty and a hundred years old, have many families mixed in with older people, are diverse, and incredibly livable. On a nice evening, my neighborhood streets are filled with walkers of all ages.
Feel free to PM me and we can chat about the transition.
Jesse
