Yes, I would try that next. Then, of course, if you have some basic practice in electronics and a simple volt meter you could open the radio and try to follow the 12 Volt line. With old radios it is likely that the big capacitors between 12 Volt and ground are shot or shorted out. They could easily be replaced. Some times the power-on switch is a problem. With the radio open you could just bridge it and see what happens and whether you hear anything out of the speakers. If the radio is out of the car you also need to hook up a 3 foot wire to the antenna center pin otherwise nothing will come out of the speakers. The cassette mechanism maybe another problem all together. But the rubber belts, almost certainly shot, can still be gotten. And the tape transport mechanism probably needs tender loving care, cleaning and new lubrication. It is all doable but it does take patience.
