30 hp outboard overheating

Trying to get the new to me 1987 Johnson outboard running. Today I removed/rebuilt the carb with OEM carb rebuild kit. I did this because for the last week or so when I went to start her she would fire but wouldn't stay running. Removed the carb and soaked her in cleaning solution for 30 minutes. Blew compressed air though all the passages and buttoned her up. Primed it and turned the key she fired right up and ran good for about 2 minutes and then the overheat buzzer went off I turned her off. I was running it with muffs and a garden hose, has a splatter of water coming out but not a stream. The water pump impellar/housing was just replaced two weeks ago. Assuming I did the water pump correctly do I have a stuck thermostat or plugged passages ?
