Charlie had the distinct advantage of having only poor competition (among main characters). Linus and Pigpen both had major problems. Linus was one dimensional and immature with his blanket problem and Pigpen was always dirty. Schroeder was obsessed with classical music, although relatively normal otherwise.
The best way to win at love or war...is to not self-eliminate. If you are odd enough...you reduce your opportunity to the small group of folks that are equally odd.
