From what I've seen on TV specials they claim ghosts have a limited presence or energy as which decreases over time. Limits on ghosts ages seemed to be an accepted norm within the program which went into reporting the oldest ghost and so on. Even the oldest ghosts had fewer sightings over several generations or even centuries.
If a ghost is an energy of some kind which we cannot measure or as of yet identify, then it might make sense that they eventually fade away.
