IMHO, the 996/997 is a great car. The issue is that the owner profile is entirely different that when you got into air cooled cars. It has been my experience that most folks selling really don't know squat about their cars except what they did for IMS/RMS/AOS. Candidly, they are "trophy" cars.
This shifts the burden to you as the buyer to know what to look for and which questions to ask. I wish I knew of a resource for you. Just read, read, and read some more.
