Could also be that you had some build up along the shaft where the throwout bearing rides that is preventing smooth operation. Though my experience is in 911s I had this issue and there was similar behavior.

Either way, sounds like you need to pull the trans and review the condition of the clutch, pressure plate, TO bearing, etc...
