G50 perfectly framed this debate. It shouldn't even be debatable. This shouldn't be about Tiger, who is the greatest golfer of our time. A golfer unwittingly broke a rule in golf, did not assess himself the required penalty, and signed his now incorrect scorecard = DQ'D.
What I did learn this evening is that the rules committee was alerted to the situation before he finished the round, and determined there was no violation and thus did not bring it to Tiger's attention. Now there may have been some deference to Tiger, but if they had spoke to him, I expect he wouldn't have had any choice but to ding himself and this controversy wouldn't exist. But they didn't.
Once he was made aware that he mistakenly broke a rule, and profited from it to boot, and signed an incorrect card, he should have withdrawn. The fact that he was provided a path to stay in the tournament by the Rules committee should have been irrelevant. Bobby Jones must have rolled over in his grave.
