Secondary Air Injection (SAI) pump, comes on for ~15-30 seconds at cold start to help light the cats.
Lives by your left knee when standing gazing into the engine compartment.
Sounds like a vacuum cleaner. When they get very loud they need R&R to clean the carbon out of the pump and possibly grease the bearings.
About $250 to replace with Bosch and $1200 with the same Bosch pump in a Porsche labeled box.
