Mine (931) was whining for a while. I cleaned it and sprayed some WD40 on it. It ran like a champ, very quite and very good fresh air delivery, with a scent of WD40.
This morning, 2 minutes after starting the car, I had a bad smell and smoke coming out of the air vents! I stopped, opened the hood and saw an electrical fire in the fresh air box. I assume the bearing from the blower motor, while being quite, had finally seized. Seems, by the time they start screeching, it's time for a new one!
