Hate to say this, but I have collected from both FedEx and UPS for damaged shipments. Gave them the damaged item and told them in no uncertain terms that "the hole that your people tore in the box" or "the smashed corner of the box" is not caused by "improper" packing.
Gotta have your ducks in a row and stand firm but have never had them beat me yet...
