There really isn't much there besides the scenery. The Eastern shore of lake superior is definitely one of the more beautiful places to drive through. You could always drive up to Wawa and see the giant goose, but that's a couple hundred kilometers up the road (2 hours or so)

The border crossing shouldn't be a big deal; getting into Canada should be easier than coming back to the US. If there isn't much of a backup it should just take a few minutes; maybe half hour if there's a lineup.

You might consider taking a detour through Ontario for your trip back home; you should be able to get from the soo to Toronto in about 10 hours going through Sudbury. Toronto could be a great overnight stop, then back through to Detroit (4 hours from TO)
