I have been thinking about the same thing! 996TT have become pretty affordable and it looks like there is a decent selection to pick from.
As far as negatives I have read about some problems with 2nd gear popout and coolant fittings problems. I'm not too impressed by the 996 interior.
I have never had an opportunity to drive a 996 so that will be my next step.
