Glen, that is a lovely Koi pond.
We have two ponds at home in Oz, and the pumps and filters are always "sensitive", when they are going well, all is fine, but if something is slightly out of balance, it all goes to 5hit. The top pond drains into the bottom pond, the bottom pond pumps back up to the filter, then the water travels back to the top pond, all sorts of permutations of problems, can lead to low water in the bottom, top or filter areas, and need diagnosis as to what pipe is blocked, or overflowing.
Only hope the tenants are looking after them.
The eldest son was looking after it when we first moved, and went around to top up the ponds in the heat of the summer, as there is always a little evaporation, and he forgot to turn off the hose, and left and went home. Two days later he went to look at the house and found almost all the fish in the bottom pond dead, as all the fresh water had been just flowing into the pond and killed them, some of those fish were 10 years old, and were really large. Kids!!
Now the only ones that survived are quite small, and the lucky fish in the top pond. Not to mention the thousands of gallons of water that just overflowed into the garden, although funnily enough, you can never find the water that overflows, it just gets sucked up by the large trees in the garden.
