What it's worth vs. what it will sell for - 2 different variables, with different influencing factors. Everyone wants to buy at a lower point than true value. Sadly, the 928 usually sells for far less than true value (from a technical/engineering/performance point of view), in almost all condition classes.
As far as “what is it worth”, I ask:
• What other makes/models cars can you buy for 13.5k? How do they compare from a technical/engineering/performance perspective?
• What other makes/models compare to a 928 from a technical/engineering/performance perspective? What do they cost in similar condition?
I think there will be very few cars on the list for 13.5k, and equal (even lesser) cars will almost always be significantly more in similar condition. What does a G50 Carrera go for in similar condition? Low to mid 20's? And some would argue that it is less car.
So, IMHO, compared to other vehicle options, the 928 is a ton of car and a bargain even at higher prices than typically seen (low mileage GTS’s excluded – those already bring top dollar).
Now, within the world of 928's, what make one more valuable than another?
• Desirability of the various "versions" over the years
• Condition
• Originality (paint, etc.)
• Maintenance history
• Immediate and long term needs
This particular 928 tics all the right boxes, and commands a premium over the average 928 because of the year/version, condition and originality. Anyone who has brought a sub-par 928 up to snuff understands that it is best financially to buy the best example you can afford. All 928’s will require care and feeding, and will have unforeseen expenses, but minimizing that risk makes sense to me.
Finally, you cannot place a value on a particular example without laying eyes and hands on it. It will take the right buyer for this car, and I feel the first person with a 928 budget of 10-20k who see and drives this car will buy it.
