Here in Oregon we have similar weather, I run, 20W-50 year round.
From my experience 15w-40 was perfect for my street driven car in a cooler climate. If you plan on tracking, or when temps get above 80, then 20w-50 may offer better protection. Keep in mind that an SC will run hotter than my carburetted 2,5.
I have also found that for me it is not cost effective to run synthetic in my air cooled cars. At least in my car, the oil starts to look dirty after about three thousand miles, so I would change it anyway. That being said, if your car's oil temps get much over 220, then synthetic may be a good choice for you.
