I think it looks an excellent garage already, and you are so close to being a Jack Olsen it doesn't matter. But I do know what you mean about the black. I'm doing a renovation job at the moment and the hall was always dark. Now it is painted white there is so much light bouncing around it's great. I was going to put in a solar tube sort of skylight but it doesn't need it now.
