The mucus is always there, you need it, traps dust and pollen, Andromeda Strain virus if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. You just don't need it to be thickened and full of goo. The water/tea helps to thin it out, allows you to cough it up like you are supposed to. It inflames the bronchi(itis means inflammation, tendinitis, for example in a tendon) and they swell, narrowing the passage for the air. Sort of gross, but spit it into a Kleenex to see if it what color it is. Oh, and spit that nasty crap out, don't swallow it. It probably would not hurt anything, but your body wants to be rid of that stuff.
