Personally, I can't stand the 1.8 and 2.0 turbos. I'd suggest sticking to something that has the VW VR6 or Audi V6. Too many reasons to list here.
If I start recommending Audis, the anti-Audi crowd will start bleating like sheep, so maybe stick to a VW, further excluding everything that wasn't built in the last 10 years.
