A couple things based on direct experience:

I had some sticky lifter tick earlier and I put a few ounces of Seafoam in the car along with changing to a lighter weight oil and it disappeared immediately.

The ATF thing? I sometimes put a quart or even less into my E46 right before an oil change (as in letting it idle for a few mins and NOT driving it) and it always helped loosen some sludge-looking crap. I saw this while it drained out. So yes, I'm a believer in doing this.

Although I suspect you'll get wildly different answers and opinions from folks.
