I have done the ATF trick as well. I personally use ATF +4(mopar fan at heart). I have done with multiple cars. I put maybe half a quart in. Drive around the block a bit just to get the car up to temp, then drain the oil. I wouldn't hotrod around with ATF in the engine.
I have also heard running diesel motor oil can help clean out sludge.
