Like the Prius, the electric cars have electrically driven compressors. They are 24 volt compressors.
I looked into this for one of the local guys who runs in some of 911 clubs. They were trying to find a way to satisfy new rules requiring cars to have a/c, and wanted to maintain performance. From what I heard, they took a Suzuki compressor (those are tiny compressors) and rigged the system together so that the compressor was driven by one of the half shafts.
The best addition to any car equipped with a tube and fin condenser would be to bolt in a parallel flow condenser and add in an auxiliary fan.
