I like to watch the show even if it is partially scripted. I like the old guy Otto. He seems to be down to earth and knowledgeable. Some of the things he does are downright crazy though. As far as the other members of the clan go Atz Lee seems like a poser. He is only interested in getting on TV and is not really there to live the "subsistence" lifestyle. The granola chick and her husband seem to more into the lifestyle.
They live real close to Homer Alaska on the Kachemak Bay. Not quite as remote as they make it seem but still not a great metropolitan city.
Their homestead is huge at around 640 acres. Combine that with no state taxes and the dividend money from the pipeline and it is almost worth living there in the cold and snow. The part about the outhouses is weird though. Seems to be everywhere up there outhouses are the norm.
