There used to be an interesting series on PBS about a 60 yo or maybe 70 who built his own cabin, trapped and caught fish.Likely in Alaska. He was almost self sufficient except for supplies like flour and basic staples flown in . I cannot remember the name of the series but it is well worth watching. Likely filmed in the 1960's. The modern day ones filmed in Alaska not so real as you say above how do they purchase the tools they need?
They have boats, snowmobiles etc etc...|Still entertaining though.
