They live real close to Homer Alaska on the Kachemak Bay. Not quite as remote as they make it seem but still not a great metropolitan city.
Their homestead is huge at around 640 acres. Combine that with no state taxes and the dividend money from the pipeline and it is almost worth living there in the cold and snow. The part about the outhouses is weird though. Seems to be everywhere up there outhouses are the norm.

The permanent fund check was $800 last year. I think I'd get a lot more if it were linked to the severity of the winters.
