The counter stops when the auction ends. If it was a 'buy it now' and someone pulled the trigger that would have stopped the auction.

The 'buy it now' disappears from the screen if you choose that purchase option.

I don't know this guy from Adam, but this could well be the real thing. Have to wait and see if the transaction completes and what the seller's feedback, etc., look like before I would call it a fake.

If this is the real deal, it might be advantageous (if you are really interested) to contact the seller regarding a second chance offer or a re-list with a buy-it-now. If the first falls through, the seller could offer it to you. Obviously be careful - this is a high dollar item, but smoking deals do occur on evil-bay.
