You're in California and I'm not familiar with your seasons, so YMMV. Here we mulch them with straw in the fall to keep the roots from freezing. Pull weeds etc. in the spring until they finish bearing (about July 1), then cut the tops down to about 2" high and fertilize.
It helps to hit every deer on the road with your pickup that you can. They love strawberry leaves.
